Your role & work environment

You will be working for the Data Science chapter: a young and dynamic team of T-shaped professionals, who take care of the further development of data-driven innovation. The team uses a comprehensive data and application infrastructure, up to date with the latest developments in the open-source domain. The ultimate success of the team is determined mainly by the way its insights, algorithms & applications are used within ING.

As a Data Scientist Chapter Lead, you will be responsible for the coaching and development of the team of Data Scientists, both on hard skills and soft skills. Additionally, you’ll also be the person in charge of backlog cultivation/prioritization with your network of business partners throughout the bank, in order to drive the business delivery through data insights/AI/machine learning. Similarly, you’ll work together with our engineers to align on the needed technical work environment of the data scientists. Finally, you’ll also pick up the activities of a data scientist yourself, working together with your team on one of the delivery projects.

Your key responsibilities

As a chapter lead, you will take 70% of your time for the following responsibilities :

  • To manage, coach, inspire, develop, evaluate and assess employees
  • To keep expertise related to the work field up to date and to develop the analytical craftsmanship
  • To steer the direction of the business delivery based on AI/data science, and supervise the delivery of your data scientists according to stakeholder’s expectations
  • To ensure a smooth collaboration with the machine-learning engineers and the platform team, in order to provide the data scientists with an efficient and up-to-date work environment
  • To collaborate closely with the BE / NL Chapter Leads for Data Analysts and Data Scientists

During the remaining 30% of your time, you will work as a Data Scientist, with the following responsibilities :

    • Treat and analyze data using statistics / machine-learning techniques through specialized data-science tooling on a Hadoop cluster (Python, Spark, Hive, Jupyter, etc.) or GCP environment (BigQuery, Dataproc, etc).
    • Search for new (open) data sources to enrich the analysis.
  • Advising: from data to insights to actions
    • Translate the presented business problem to an analytical approach. Think of business problems such as identifying specific client behavior or needs, further personalizing our commercial approach, improving our internal process efficiency through automation / digitalization, etc.
    • Transform these analyses into comprehensible information, define actions, formulate advice and present this to the relevant stakeholders (including senior management).
    • Bring your analytical solution to production.
