The application of machine learning techniques has been steadily increasing in several engineering fields. For communication system design, multiple use cases have recently been identified in which machine learning can play an important role. We are looking for a student to study some recent and powerful machine learning techniques and investigate how these can be used to shape next generation communication systems.

Our team, located in the city of Antwerp, is widely recognized for pioneering and contributing to breakthroughs in broadband access technologies, which provide data communication at gigabit speeds between residential customers and the fiber backbone of telecom operators. These technologies are accompanied by optimization-intensive scheduling and physical-layer design, well suited for machine learning techniques. The goal of this internship is 1) to investigate and implement particular recent low complex machine learning techniques ; 2) to apply these to concrete practical communication system use cases that are internally studied; and 3) to explore the potential of these techniques for application in the broader field of future broadband fixed access systems.

Job Responsibilities & Competencies
  • Through literature study, you will acquire knowledge of particular machine learning techniques, with a main focus on low-complex techniques that are powerful yet only require small implementation complexity, and thus allow for real-time machine learning.
  • Through interaction with the team, you will gain a deep understanding of concrete practical problem statements for which the application of real-time machine learning can potentially innovate beyond state-of-the-art
  • You will implement the real-time machine learning algorithms in Matlab and/or Python and apply them to the considered problem at hand to evaluate its potential
  • You will document and present the developed techniques and results
  • Qualifications
  • You are an enrolled Master student or PhD candidate in electrical engineering, computer science, applied mathematics, or physics
  • You are a quick learner
  • You are familiar with Matlab and/or Python
  • You are fluent in English
  • Imagine creating technology that has the potential to change the world. Working with us, you will have a positive impact on people's lives and help to overcome some of the world's most pressing challenges. We act inclusively and respect the uniqueness of people. At Nokia, employment decisions are made regardless of race, color, national or ethnic origin, religion, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, age, marital status, disability, protected veteran status or other characteristics protected by law.
