PhD Student - Department of Biology à Ghent

Description du poste

Job description

The Laboratory of Protistology and Aquatic Ecology (Ghent University) invites applications for a fully-funded PhD studentship for 1 year and extended with another 3 years (after positive evaluation) to study interactions between plankton and suspended particulate matter (SPM) in the North Sea. The impact of biological processes on SPM dynamics in coastal ecosystems is insufficiently understood: while biology is affected by the variation in SPM concentration and composition, biological processes themselves can in turn impact SPM dynamics. The student will use a combination of field and experimental approaches to study the relationship between phytoplankton community composition, exudate production and SPM dynamics and flocculation in relation to light, nutrients and temperature. The project forms part of the Belspo-funded BG-PART project (BioGeochemical PARTicle interactions and feedback loops on the Belgian Continental Shelf).
The job duties include:

  • Monitoring of phytoplankton community composition, primary production and exudate production
  • Ecophysiological experiments to study phytoplankton exudate production along environmental gradients
  • Study the interaction between phytoplankton and SPM flocculation dynamics in experimental settings
  • Write scientific publications
  • Supervise bachelor and master students during research assignments and practical courses
  • Job profile

  • You hold a Master’s degree in Sciences: Biology, Bioscience Engineering, Oceanography or equivalent diploma. Holders of a PhD degree cannot apply.
