A motivated PhD student is sought for work on the synthesis and characterization of stimuli responsive polymer nanoparticles in the Nanobiophysics and Soft Matter Interfaces research group. The PhD student with his/her work will contribute to a large UHasselt interdisciplinary collaborative project “Bioresponsive nanocarriers as a therapy for cancer and wound healing”.

De groep van Prof. dr. Anitha Ethirajan specialiseert zich in de ontwikkeling van functionele materialen voor geavanceerde biomedische toepassingen (bioimaging, medicijnafgifte, detectie, contrastmiddelen en theranostica). De interdisciplinaire groep legt een sterke nadruk op het rationele ontwerp van nanodeeltjes en het onderzoek van zachte materie en nano-bio interfaces. De groep heeft een sterk netwerk en samenwerkingen opgebouwd met zowel interne (aan de UHasselt) als externe nationale en internationale onderzoeksgroepen. De NSI-groep bevindt zich in het Instituut voor Materiaalonderzoek () aan de Universiteit Hasselt, behorend tot de 3% beste universiteiten ter wereld volgens de U-Multirank in 2020.

You will work at the Institute for Materials Research and the project involves collaboration with research groups in BIOMED and CMK institutes of UHasselt. The biological studies will be performed by dedicated candidates in the collaborators’ groups.

The research project will deal both with the fundamental aspects of material synthesis, but also on the materials properties and characterization of nanoparticles.

You will focus your research on the development of advanced nano(bio)materials with functional properties stimuli responsiveness) using rational design of materials to overcome existing challenges in the delivery of active compounds. The research will be strongly integrated with other ongoing research projects on functional nanocarriers at the institute. You have access to state-of-the-art infrastructure to realize the envisaged project goals and will work within a stimulating and interdisciplinary research environment. The materials developed by you will be further studied in the collaborator’s groups with complimentary expertise.

Besides your project, other tasks involve:

  • Professionalize yourself in advanced characterization techniques and synthesis procedures of nanomaterials by attending a number of specialized courses/workshops.
  • Develop transferable and networking skills by participating in national and international conferences, and personal development and soft skills via the Doctoral School.
  • Take part in teaching (practicals, exercises) and the organization of workshops/symposia.
  • This PhD project is formally part of the Doctoral School of Sciences and Technology at the UHasselt Faculty of Sciences.

  • You obtained a master’s degree in chemistry, physical chemistry, biochemistry (or equivalent)

    Final-year students are (likewise) encouraged to apply.

  • You are motivated by the topic of advanced nanomaterials applied to the fields of cancer therapy and wound healing/tissue engineering.
  • You have experience in the production and characterization of nanoparticles and a solid back ground in colloids.
  • A good background in polymer chemistry and experience in polymer nanoparticle synthesis is a plus
  • Some basic knowledge in nanomaterials-cell studies and relevant characterization techniques.
  • You are fluent in the English language, both orally as in writing.
  • You are well-organized and dedicated to performing a practical experiment in the best way, ensuring that technical instruments are employed / calibrated in the right way.
  • You possess good relational, communicative and reporting skills to function within a interdisciplinary research group.
  • Although you will get the possibility to professionalize yourself by attending specialized courses and workshops, your application is further strengthened if you possess a good background and experience in the fields of advanced nanoparticle synthesis with functional properties stimuli responsiveness, encapsulation of active/biologically relevant compounds), physical and chemical characterization techniques as well as nanoparticle-cell interactions.
  • You are willing to contribute to a positive working atmosphere and are able to connect with the different domains and collaborators (practical assistants, PhD students, post-docs, and professors).
